Carroll Shelby
We recently met up with Mr. Shelby at the Recent Peterson Museum Trans Am Tribute, in ln Los Angeles where he has been honored before. We were asked how the Shelby Driving shoes were doing at a2zracergear.com. Actually, the shoes our best sellers at a2z Racer Gear, we trumpeted proudly.
The Shelby Driving shoes were our first line and when we were trying to come up with an idea of design & style, the Shelby Cobra snapped out at us. After all, the Peterson Automobile Museum refers to Mr. Shelby’s endless vision for automotive excellence is proven from Carroll's often imitated but never duplicated, race-winning Shelby Cobras to the first Dodge Viper and Shelby Series I, the Carroll Shelby collection of benchmark automobiles can be counted over 50 years. You might not be aware that Carroll personally raced automobiles in the Fifties (often while wearing his unique striped overalls). Automobiles Carrol Shelby raced includes the MG TC (similar to the car in which he won his first race), a and the rare 1959 Corvette Italia, which brought about his collaboration with Ford.
As anyone knows, the cars Mr. Shelby is best recognized for are the attractive Cobras. The first one was finished in 1962, model number CSX2000. Back then, Mr. Shelby designed and built many, now priceless, racing Cobras like the first of five 289FIA models, which won their class at 24 heures of Le Mans, and Carrol Shelby's Daytona Coupe, the only American car to win FIA World Manufacturers Championship. Although putting an exact value on Carrol Shelby's original competition cobras is impossible, experts estimate their worth in the several millions of US dollars.
Shelby went on to manage racing teams for other Ford-powered motor vehicles, like the 24 Hours of Le Mans-winning GT40 Mark I, laquered with the blue & orange of the Le Mans-winning Gulf team race cars.
Only 22 of the incredible big-block 427 Competition Cobra cars were built before the intro of the only slightly more tractable Street Competition (S/C) version. One of them was even used in the Carroll Shelby School of High Performance Driving.
500 of the latter model were ever produced. In 1990 Shelby also designed a Dodge-powered CAN-AM spec racecar. His collaboration with Chrysler resulted in the jaw dropping Dodge Viper.
A crowning achievement in Shelby’s life is the design of the Shelby Series I, which is powered by an Oldsmobile V-8. This association with GM and Olds made Shelby the first ever to be part of the design of performance machines for each of the Big Three automakers. To this day, Carrol Shelby continues to be active, managing the daily activities of Carroll Shelby International, which designs and engineers super cars. Among its many interests is the ongoing manufacture of quality Shelby Cobras, the unparalled sports car which first made Shelby famous over four decades ago.
