The law requires that you have it. If you get pulled over, the officer will ask you to provide proof that you do. If you have a loan, the bank will require that you provide proof that it is in place. Collision insurance is pays for the damage to your vehicle when it hits or is hit by another car or object. This type of coverage will pay to fix your vehicle minus whatever deductible you have in place.

Comprehensive coverage is basically everything that is not collision insurance. This insurance pays for damages to your vehicle caused by things other than collision. Things like theft, fire, floods, or damage done by animals or other extreme acts are covered by comprehensive insurance.

You can get an auto insurance policy pretty much any way you like. The options are literally endless. Let's take a look at collision insurance and find out the best way to go about obtaining it.

You can purchase collision insurance without getting comprehensive insurance, but often times it does not work the other way around. The question needs to be asked, do I need collision insurance? If you drive a 1978 Ford Pinto that has the floor boards rusted out, you probably don't need collision insurance. You will pay more for it in the first year than the car is worth, and most providers will tell you this. However, if you have a brand new corvette that is paid for, you will most certainly want collision insurance.
