96 Impala SS For Sale

Automakers risk a great deal of cachet when they resurrect a fabled nameplate, and this is exactly what Chevrolet was doing when they brought the Impala SS back into the fold for the 1994 model year after a 25-year hiatus. This fifth generation of the Impala SS lasted only three model years, which culminated with a '96 Impala SS for sale that has done a lot better since than it did then. Did Chevrolet tarnish the Impala SS name? While it may have seemed so at the time, the answer in retrospect is likely no.

Chevrolet first resurrected the Impala SS badge at the 1992 Detroit Auto Show as a concept car that GM designer Jon Moss had conceived. Moss based the concept on the Caprice at the time, but it had two inches less ground clearance, and included a massive 500 cubic-inch engine. Due to the favorable reaction, GM had these new Impala SSs rolling off production lines in Texas within 14 months. Unfortunately, these Impalas rolled of the lines with a substantially smaller engine than the one that Moss had included in the concept.

Like the two previous model years, the '96 Impala SS for sale was essentially a high-performance Caprice, a Chevrolet Caprice LTZ, with a deluxe exterior trim package and an iron-headed Corvette-based 5.7-liter LT1 V8 that produces 260 horsepower. This powered the 1996 Impala SS from zero to 60 mph in approximately 7 seconds. In order to stop this machine from 60 mph within 120 feet, Chevrolet added attractive 17-inch rolling stock along with larger and more powerful four-wheel disc brakes.

Like all full-size American sedans at the time and since, the '96 Impala SS for sale was loaded with creature comforts. In addition to a deluxe air-conditioning system, there was leather upholstery everywhere along with power everything. This car didn't miss a beat in terms of the luxury features that were available to car buyers then.

Perhaps this helped price the car out of reach of the segment that Chevy was targeting when they gave the car its bad boy image with the Onyx Black paint and the rear-deck spoiler. The Impala was also available in Dark Cherry and Dark Gray Green. The '96 edition also got an analog tachometer and a center-console-mounted shifter that hadn't been present in the earlier models.

Mechanically, the '96 Impala SS for sale, as well as the earlier models, got a sports-tuned version of the suspension that Chevrolet used on Caprices intended for police. Along with the suspension, the Impala SS got reinforced shocks, reinforced springs, a high-capacity reverse flow cooling system, dual exhaust, a transmission cooler, and a higher-output electrical system. Unfortunately, the Impala SS did not get the external oil-to-air engine oil cooler installed on police Caprices.

There were approximately 23,000 1996 Impala SSs sold, and it is this small number that has contributed most to the car's success after the fact. Owning a 1996 Impala SS is about owning something that's relatively rare, and not easy to come by, but that's not all there is to it. Despite its taxi and cop-car underpinnings shining through, the '96 Impala SS is a whole lot of modern day muscle for the money.

Potential buyers should be aware that there was a safety recall with the 1996 models due to an issue with the lower control-arm ball joint. Potential buyers should inspect this part themselves if capable, or have it inspected by a professional.
