Why do rumors evolve? How do the rumors travel through the place that you work? Why do people listen and participate to keep the rumor moving along? Are you part of the "rumor mill"?

Why rumors evolve? The reason: people start rumors is to get the jump on information to their friends. They see this as "investigative reporting", and most comes from visual sightings. Visual reporting is made much easier with electronic devices such as: camera phones, laptops, iPod, and small portable cameras. People are addicted to controversy.

How do the rumors travel through the place that you work? If you find the person that is in a central location and loves to talk, and is not afraid of sharing information, this would be a perfect candidate. This person usually is not afraid to speak their mind.

Why do people listen and participate to keep the rumor moving along?

Example: Cathy sees Bobby,  at Wal-Mart Supercenter, and he tells her about his new red corvette. A few minutes later Cathy spoke with Sue, a married co-worker, in the grocery department with Bobby. There is only one shopping cart. Sue is placing items in the cart. Sue and Bobby are laughing and joking. Cathy having her blackberry phone in hand and bingo, now there is a photo, of two people shopping at Wal-Mart.

Cathy feeling as though she has to fill her co-workers in on the "investigative information" she tells her story, with much enthusiasm. She leaves no detail out, maybe even adding in a few things. Then out comes the photo, and of course everyone at the table has their phone and wants a copy. Except for Jessica. The only one in the group that speaks up. Jessica mentions that she has some pictures that she would like to show as well.

Jessica begins to show pictures of Cathy, Joe (Cathy's husband) and Bobby at the lake. They were all cooking out at the lake and Joe ask Cathy to go and pick up a few things at Wal-Mart for the cookout. Bobby offered to take her. Suddenly, no one wants a copy of Cathy and Bobby shopping. Go figure, the investigative reporting wasn't as it appeared. This happens more than you think.

In this situation, all turned out well, because someone corrected the rumor. What would have happened if Jessica did not attend the cookout?

With cell phones with cameras, photos can be taken so easily. Pictures may say a thousand words, but sometimes those words are misinterpreted. Those misunderstandings can cause embarrassment and pain for the people involved.

Are you part of the "rumor mill"? Notice at your next lunch hour, how many people have claimed their space, so to speak. People like to sit in the same place daily with the same people. It is just the nature of people, we like to sit with like minded people.

Pay close attention of the types of conversations that your group participates in, do you talk about others? If so: is it fact or rumor? If it is fact, are you absolutely sure?

Remember: It is always funnier when it is happening to someone else. What goes around, comes around. You never know who will become your supervisor. Those who talk about others could someday talk about you. Be cautious of anyone who says "You didn't hear it from me". Food for thought: what would they say about you if they thought you would never find out?

Now if you would like to avoid all of this investigative reporting, you could always wake up every day, and love your job like I do! If you ever get tired of what you are currently doing, I would like for you to click on a whole new life.
