Corvette Zr1

At the end of 2010, the first modern electric car from General Motors will go on sale in select markets. GM has already priced the car at $41,000 which is significantly higher than the Nissan LEAF one of its competitors, but if rumors of a huge dealer price premium turn out to be true, then the Volt could cost some drivers an additional $20,000 when they take delivery.

Yes, positively shocking: the eclectic electric Chevy Volt could cost more than $61,000 if some Chevrolet dealers have their way. That news was shared by Autoblog in early August 2010 when the popular car blog got a hold of a letter from a Chevy dealer in response to their online inquiry of the vehicle.

Price Premiums

Jacking up the price of a car isn't anything new, especially for those models which are in high demand and production can't keep up. The Corvette ZR1 has carried a price premium and most any car that is rare or hard to find usually costs a certain amount over the sticker price.

For the first few months of production, the number of Volts produced will be low with the assembly line gearing up through 2011. Indeed, General Motors recently announced a boost in production, explaining that they expect to build 45,000 Volts in 2011, up from the 30,000 initially planned. That move would probably align supply with demand especially if GM can pass on cost savings to customers by lowering the price. In any case, many buyers will be able to benefit from a $7500 federal tax break and $5000 state tax break in California and some other states.

Volt Specifics

Unlike the LEAF, the Chevrolet Volt will be able to extend its driving range due to its included 1.4-liter gas engine. The Leaf's range is limited to about 100 miles as it relies on battery power only. The Volt's battery pack is smaller and will give 40 miles of all electric drive before the gas engine kicks in. With a full tank, the total range of the Volt is 340 miles and can be extended further with a refueling.

Optionally, potential Volt buyers may want to look at the Chevrolet Cruze a car with a 1.4-liter turbocharged engine. When paired with a six-speed manual transmission and Eco package selected, the Cruze should get about 40 miles to the gallon on the highway, providing best in class fuel economy in its class for a gas powered vehicle.
